Submental fullness, more commonly known as a “double chin,” is a common cosmetic issue that both men and women face. It can be a result of genetics, aging, or weight gain. Double chins aren’t always remedied with diet and exercise alone and can be treated non-surgically with Kybella.
Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved injectable used to permanently destroy the fat cells under the chin. Deoxycholic acid is naturally found in our body and is responsible for breaking down fats. Kybella is made of synthetic deoxycholic acid, and when it is injected into the fat, it destroys the cell membrane that releases the fat. The body flushes out the fat naturally over the course of time. As the fat melts away, the jawline and face will become slimmer. Once those fat cells are destroyed, they can no longer store or accumulate fat. Kybella is a permanent treatment; no more treatments are required once you’ve reached your desired goal.
The week prior to your treatment, you should avoid NSAIDs (such as Motrin, Aleve, Ibuprofen, Goody Powder), Vitamin E, Omega 3/Fish Oil supplements to minimize your risk of bruising. Arrive at your appointment with clean skin and no make-up. Men should arrive clean-shaven with no visible stubble. If you develop cold/flu-like symptoms, blemishes, rashes, or any abnormality of the skin on the neck or chin, please call the office prior to your appointment.
Kybella treatment is non-invasive, and there is no significant downtime. If needed, you can return to work after treatment. When you arrive, the area will be cleansed, and topical numbing will be applied to your comfort. Your provider will mark the areas to inject and then administer a series of injections directly into the fat beneath your chin. The injection process usually takes about 30 minutes.
After your treatment is complete, you will likely have some swelling, bruising, redness, or numbness in the treatment area that will last a few days. Subtle swelling can last 4-6 weeks. Ice packs and cold compresses are recommended over the next couple of days after treatment to help reduce swelling in the treatment area. You will need to avoid aggressive exercise and saunas for 2-3 days after treatment. Drinking plenty of water and fluids after treatment is recommended.
The results from the Kybella treatment won’t appear immediately as it takes time for the acid to break down the underlying fat. You can expect to see results a few weeks after the procedure when the deoxycholic acid breaks down an adequate amount of fat in the chin area. Your provider will recommend the number of treatments needed to reach your goal and look great from any angle.
