A potassium titanyl-phosphate laser, also known as a KTP laser, utilizes a crystal made of potassium titanyl phosphate as its core component.
The KTP Aura laser is used to specifically treat small superficial vessels just below the surface of the skin. The most common conditions treated are telangiectasias (visible broken capillaries) of the face and cherry angiomas (sometimes called red dots) of the body.
The KTP Aura laser uses a handpiece that looks like a pencil to trace over the broken vessels or red spots, causing the capillary walls to collapse and shrink in size.
No topical numbing is needed for your treatment, and treatment can be done in 15-30 minutes, depending on the number of lesions being treated. There is no downtime, and you can resume your normal activities immediately after treatment. During the treatment, you will feel a warm stinging sensation, like the snapping of a rubber band against the skin. You may experience slight redness for a couple of hours after treatment.
Fall or winter is the best time to schedule treatment. Sun must be avoided 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after treatment to prevent hyperpigmentation (darkening) from occurring at the sites treated. Multiple treatments may be needed to achieve desired results. Schedule your consult today with one of our providers to see if KTP laser treatment is the best treatment option for you.
